AB OBJECTIVES: Elevated soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) levels have been
reported in the sera from HIV-1 seropositive individuals. In this study,
we determined plasma sIL-2R levels of seropositives every two to three
months and investigated their relation to the clinical stages and virus
isolation. METHODS: Heparinized bloods were obtained and separated into
plasma and PBMCs. Plasma were used to quantitate the sIL-2R using ELIZA
(T cell diagnostic Inc.). PBMCs were used for viral isolation. RESULTS:
In four HIV-1 seropositives whose clinical stages progressed during this
study, we recognized that sIL-2R was transiently elevated (> or = x 1.5)
before disease progression. Next, we compared the sIL-2R levels with the
period required for HIV-1 isolation. We found the correlations between
them. As sIL-2R level was higher, the viral isolation was delayed in
each individual. CONCLUSION: Precise observations of plasma sIL-2R
levels were important to predict the disease progression of
seropositives.
